Sometimes it's all for the greater good of the mission, but sometimes the mission...is yourself.
BIO:
Character Name: Riley Finn
PB: Marc Blucas
Age: Early 20’s…23?
Gender: Male
Birth Place: Iowa
Species: Human
Category (Original or canon? Joss Whedon, Anne Rice, Laurell K.
Hamilton?... please note that if you are playing an original
character, you must STILL pick a 'verse. Let us know what rules you
are following.): Whedon
Sexual Orientation: Previously predominantly heterosexual, however due
to the calamitous dissolution of his relationship with Buffy Summers
and the sudden presence of hyper-sexual creatures in Sunnydale, there
is a possibility he can be swayed.
Family: Two parents in Iowa, typical loving American family. Totally
clueless to Riley’s activities in the world of the supernatural.
Physical Description: Muscular, well toned body as a result of a
meticulous work-out regiment instituted originally by Riley’s military
ties and later carried on out of habit. Not overly beefy, but strong
and lean.
Eye Color: Blue
Hair Color: Dark blonde/light brown
Height: 6'2”
Weight: 185-200 lbs (no fat, all muscle)
Scars: Various minor scars, one large scar on left side of chest from
injuries incurred from the siege of the Initiative headquaters and
battle with A.D.A.M
Piercings: None
Tattoos: None
Personality:
Quirks/Traits: Has a developed a near OCD level of attention to detail
in his years with the military, and even more so following his stint
as part of Buffy’s Scoobies. He tends to be overly organized and never
takes action unless he thoroughly analyzes the situation. This
meticulous nature has kept Riley at the top of his game and alive,
especially in lieu of the fact that he has no extra-natural abilities,
unlike many of his comrades.
Likes: Organization, strategy, violence (though he’d never admit it),
basketball, and a good chicken sandwich.
Dislikes: The undead, people who are late, feeling inadequate, briefs
Obsessions: Order, winning
Friends: Riley has a past association with Buffy and the Scoobies, and
thus already has a built in network of friends, despite odd tension
between he and his former girlfriend. Riley has a very amicable
nature, and generally gets along with anyone, especially those who are
on the side of good.
Enemies: The undead, demons, werewolves, etc. He also really doesn’t
like Spike.
Love Interest: There are resulting echoes of Riley’s relationship with
Buffy, but right now he’s a free agent.
Pets: None, though he’d love a big dog to share his place with.
History (from the beginning to now; assume we don't know anything
about your character, other than what you've already provided above):
Riley Finn has always been something of the boy next door. Great
parents, warm up-bringing, small town boy (in this case, that town was
Huxley, Iowa) through and through. If ever there was a poster child
from apple pie, mom, and the American dream…he was it.
…at least on the surface.
The truth is, Riley has been living a double life for a good portion
of his formative years to the present, having been one of the earliest
recruits for a covert military operation known as the Initiative (a
shortened version of its coded government operation name: The Demonic
Research Initiative), a special ops unit dedicated to the
classification, containment, and occasional defense against
cryptozoological and paranormal entities, otherwise known to the
lesser sciences as “the supernatural”. The government operation was
designed to take a group of young soldiers and raise them from the
ground up, making them the first line of defense against the
supernatural, and raising the children that would eventually become
their first string of soldiers into the most adaptable hunters of the
creatures that go bump in the night.
Thus was Riley Finn’s childhood and teen years. While his peers fussed
over prom dates and the big game Friday night, he was taught to brand
silver bullets, survive in the wilderness alone against a Wendigo, and
capture a vampire with minimal biting. Needless to say, his youth
experience lacked a little…but it was a sacrifice he was willing to
make to protect his country and the people he loved.
His involvement in the Initiative took full swing when he entered
college at UC Sunnydale, where the fraternity house doubled as a
Initiative stronghold. It was here that his services were needed the
most, as the area was teeming with the forces of darkness. It was also
here that he encountered Buffy Summers, a great love of his life…and
even more surprising, a girl who understood him for who he was. After
all, she was the Slayer, she knew a thing or two about darkness.
It was through his involvement with Buffy that Riley discovered a
terrible truth: the group who had raised him, taught him to be
everything he was…was using him and his research to create a weapon
far more fiendish and diabolical than anything that hunted the night.
Faced with the momentous decision to leave everything he knew to do
what was right, Riley joined forces with the Slayer and her crew to
put an end to the Initiative’s plan. When it came down to choosing, it
wasn’t so hard for him to ally with Buffy…after all, even Riley knew
it was a bad idea to question prophecy.
…and so it was that Riley Finn became a free agent, and a member of
the Slayer’s elite protectors of the Hellmouth. For a short time, he
and Buffy even had a romantic relationship…but all good things, as
they say...
As Riley got more and more involved in Buffy’s world, he came to
realize how inconsequential he was. No matter what training he had,
he’d never match the abilities of the true chosen one...and as Buffy’s
love for him seemingly faltered, Riley felt lost. For the first time,
he realized everything he had was gone…and what he gave it up for was
slowly slipping away. That’s when the military came calling again.
The Initiative was reopening, this time under different
administration, and they wanted Riley back. Faced with the decision,
he gave Buffy the chance to hold on to him forever…and she chose to
let him go.
Heartbroken, Riley left Sunnydale and returned to active duty.
Now the time has come for him to return. New species of vampire
appearing have made the Initiative curious, and they want their
resident vampire expert to check it out. Unfortunately, this means
Riley must come face to face with the thing that he so painfully left
behind. Add to this the growing distrust for his employers…Riley had
been betrayed by the Initiative before, and given time to clear his
head, is not so certain they won’t do it again.
So, with baggage and a mission…Riley returns to Sunnydale to face what
he was, put an end to what he is, and become what he’s always needed
to be:
Free.
Talents: An expert in almost all forms of combat, Riley is skilled in
many different forms of marital arts, a trained marksman with most
automatic and rudimentary firing weapons, and is very skilled with a
blade. Beyond this, he is also mentally sharp, trained in all aspects
of espionage from techno-work to simple undercover. He’s the
quintessential spy…think James Bond, but with a boy-next-door flair.
Strengths: Physically and mentally strong as a result of his
spy/soldier training in the Initiative, he also tends to frequently
carry a vast array of techno gadgets that aid his missions. He’s a
formidable opponent…with or without his toys.
Weaknesses: He’s human, and despite his awesome physical prowess and
abilities as a spy, soldier, and field combatant…he is still
susceptible to all the major damages, wounds, and death inducing
situations that would kill an average person. Riley also has
previously been involved in voluntary blood-letting (i.e. allowing a
vampire to drink your blood for the high it provides), and while he
has since withdrawn himself from such an activities…the memory of the
sexual and emotional high it provides will always be with him, and
provided the right circumstance (and vampire), there’s always a danger
he could fall off the wagon.
Long-Term Goals: Rid the world of evil…one blood-sucking son of a
bitch at a time.
Short Term Goals: Due to the arrival and revelation that there is
seemingly more than one form of vampire now in Sunnydale, Riley will
be returning to town to attempt to catalogue and tag the different
vampiric presences that have converged on the city on behalf of the
Initiative. However, Riley’s allegiance to his parent organization is
not as strong as it once was, considering the underhanded presence
they have had in his past…and his ties may soon be broken with them.
Other things you feel are relevant: The Riley that will return to
Sunnydale will not be the Riley who left. While he’s still a military
man, his ties to the group are a little less stringent…he’s becoming a
rogue hunter more and more daily, and because of this…combined with
his meticulous nature…he may be as much as problem in town as he is an
ally.
What your character thinks of those they’ve met: (please list those
characters in the game your character has interacted with and their
impressions of them; also list characters yours would already know of
coming into this—-ex:, Giles would know Buffy, a Talamasca member
would know of David Talbot, etc.): Since Riley has met a good number
of characters in the comm, it would take a grand amount of time to
cover them all, so here are a few-
Buffy Summers- Confused. Riley strongly respects and admires Buffy for
her strength and significance in the battle against evil, but
considering the personal history he and the Slayer share, there is
also a level of discomfort. Things ended rather poorly for the duo,
and while he knows that it was never Buffy’s intention to make him
feel unimportant, it is not something he can completely escape. Thus,
he is always willing to join Buffy in battle and help her, but this
time around is less likely to trust her in the personal aspects of his
life.
Dawn- Riley has a level of sympathy for Dawn, due to the fact that he
cannot imagine how difficult it must be for her to exist in her
sister’s world of danger and darkness at every turn. Buffy’s life was
thrust on her, Dawn’s was a result of the fallout…and a normal teenage
life is no longer possible. He feels protective of her, and wishes he
could provide he a more normal and happy existence. However, Riley
also has no idea that Dawn is the key, so he’s in for a surprise.
Spike- Contempt. Riley has a hard time with the fact that Spike has
somehow integrated himself into the Scoobies, especially considering
his horrific past. While Riley has no great love for Angel, he
respects Angel’s fight to be a champion for the downtrodden and redeem
himself for past sins, whereas he views Spike as playing a part cause
he’s forced to. In short, Riley thinks Spike is a hypocritical asshat.
Who your character would like to meet: Riley would be pleased to meet
Anita Blake, as her reputation as a famed executioner of the undead
precedes her…he would likely get a long with the Winchester brothers
for similar reasons. Beyond this, Riley would like to encounter the
Anne Rice and Twilight ‘verse vamps, despite not knowing their names
or who they are…because it will aid his cataloguing of the different
species of nosferatu.
